Let’s take a look at how a pilot can earn that much over the course of their career, and at the continuing job prospects for airline pilots in general.

Airline Pilot Salary Progression

As with most things, pilots at the start of their career, well, start at the beginning. After earning their commercial pilot certificate, and before they’ve logged enough time to earn their Airline Transport Pilot Certificate, there’s a period where they’ll be building time. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, “the median annual wage for commercial pilots was $93,300 in May 2020” (with a spread of 47k – 200k) with jobs ranging from charter flights, to aerial tours, instruction, agricultural flying, air ambulance, and more.

After building an appropriate amount of time, and earning an ATP certificate, the next step is generally to start flying with a regional airline. These regional airlines usually fly under a partnership with a major airline such as United or Delta, but they’re not actually a part of that airline. In this way, many regional pilots can use these jobs as stepping stones to a seat with one of the major airlines, though some pilots may decide to stay with a regional airline.

As one might expect, the pay for regional airline pilots is less than the pay in the majors. Historically, regional pilot salaries could be pretty lean, though they have been improving recently, along with perks such as signing bonuses. According to ZIP Recruiter, “As of July 13, 2021, the average annual pay for a Regional Airline Pilot in the United States is $66,291 a year.” They also say that they are “seeing annual salaries as high as $146,500 and as low as $20,000.” The level of pay for a regional pilot can also be influenced by a variety of factors, including where they are based and seniority in the company.

Most sources agree that pilots will fly around four to six years with a regional before they start seeing opportunities to move into a job with one of the majors. So, how much can you make at the majors? Again, according to the BLS, “The median annual wage for airline pilots, copilots, and flight engineers was $160,970 in May 2020.” Once in the majors, again factoring in concerns such as where a pilot is based, seniority, and what aircraft they are flying, pilots can start in the range of $90,000 – 100,000 annually, and potentially end up making as much as $350,000 – 400,000 a year.

Commercial and Airline Pilot Job Growth

As mentioned previously, the combination of many current pilots preparing to retire from their jobs and the creation of many new jobs, the BLS forecasts strong growth in the industry, saying “overall employment of airline and commercial pilots is projected to grow 5 percent from 2019 to 2029, faster than the average for all occupations. Most job opportunities will arise from the need to replace pilots who leave the occupation permanently over the projection period.“

The airline has already resumed hiring pilots, starting with a group of 300 qualified candidates who had the hiring process frozen on them as the COVID pandemic hit. Along with the other airlines, this represents a concerted effort from United to try and stay on top of the continuing pilot shortage.

United plans on providing training to pilot candidates from the ground up with their United Aviate Academy, and they have some high level aspirations in mind when it comes to the training. Their goal is to train 5000 new pilot candidates through the Aviate Academy over the next decade, with at least half of those candidates being women and people of color, and draw on other qualified candidates from around the country to try and meet the continuing demand for pilots.

This is a strong move on United’s part to address and increase the diversity in their pilot workforce. Of United’s more than 12,000 pilots, a little over 7% are women, and 13% are people of color.

As laid out in their Aviate Pathway, United says academy recruits will go through a roughly five year process to work toward a pilot job with United. United plans on starting their first class of academy candidates in the fall, and hopes to have them graduating during the first half of 2022.

As this news highlights, with the airlines up their efforts to find and/or train qualified pilot candidates to meet the demands of the ongoing pilot shortage, there in no better time to get into an aviation career.

The post United Airlines Makes Hiring Push, Working to Address Pilot Shortage appeared first on Upper Limit Aviation.

In an email to aviation news outlet AvWeb, the FAA said they are “…closely monitoring the active vaccine trials and awaiting the outcome of the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee’s scheduled meeting next week.” They added that “While the agency has made no final decisions, we are prepared to evaluate the use of each vaccine by medical certificate holders as soon as an emergency-use authorization is issued.”

The meeting the FAA refers to in the email to AvWeb was set to conclude yesterday, so a decision or further clarification may be available soon.

The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), according to a recent post on their website, is also working with the FAA on getting clarification. However, until more is known, they are recommending members not receive a vaccine shot, as it would disqualify pilots medicals for an indefinite period:

“Although clinical trials are under way for a COVID-19 vaccine, there are currently no known effective vaccines or therapeutics. And since no trial COVID-19 vaccine has full FDA approval, the FAA considers participation in COVID-19 vaccine trials medically disqualifying for pilots for an indefinite period. ALPA representatives are working with the FAA to better define a policy as the science evolves. In Canada, the director of Civil Aviation Medicine stated that participation in medical trials isn’t considered compatible with aviation medical certification.“

ALPA instead recommends focusing on personal health, and getting a regular flu shot, saying that “While a healthy lifestyle—including eating right, exercising, maintaining a reasonable weight, and getting enough sleep—may not prevent infection by either virus, establishing these routines can contribute to a stronger immune system, which can help fight these diseases and potentially limit the risk of experiencing more serious symptoms. Combining these healthy habits with getting a flu shot and continuing to practice social distancing, hand washing, and mask wearing remain the best protection.“

According to FlightGlobal, “The agency “historically” does not approve vaccines or medications for pilots for at least one year after approval by the FDA.” ALPA and other groups are urging the FAA to approve a vaccine for use by airline pilots and flight crews as soon as possible.

The flight training scholarships offered by AOPA fall into one of four categories:

AOPA High School Flight Training Scholarship

For: Eighty high school students, ages 15 – 18

Scholarship Value: $10,000

Recipients of this scholarship can use it, as part of the AOPA You Can Fly program, to cover direct flight training expenses in the pursuit of a sport, recreational, or private pilot certificate. Recipients will be required to complete a flight training milestone, by either soloing or earning their certificate within one year for receiving the scholarship.

AOPA Teacher Flight Training Scholarship

For: Up to twenty school high school teachers

Scholarship Value: $10,000

Recipients of this scholarship must be AOPA members, be a full-time employee of a high school or school system, and use the AOPA High School Aviation Stem Curriculum to help teach science, technology, engineering or math. Recipients can use the scholarship, as part of the AOPA You Can Fly program, to cover direct flight training expenses in the pursuit of a sport, recreational, or private pilot certificate.

AOPA Primary Flight Training Scholarship

For: Current AOPA Members over 16 by the application deadline

Scholarship Value: $2,500 – $7,500

Recipients can use the scholarship to cover training expenses in the pursuit of a sport, recreational, or private pilot certificate.

AOPA Advanced Rating Scholarship

For: Oustanding pilots with career aspirations

Scholarship Value: $3,000 – $10,000

Recipients must be AOPA members, and seeking one of the following ratings or certificates:

• Instrument
• Commercial
• Certificated Flight Instructor
• Certificated Flight Instructor-Instruments
• Multiengine Instructor

Recipients can use the scholarship to cover training expenses in the pursuit of these ratings or certificates.
